SANTA MARTA MOUNTAINS AND CARIBBEAN LOWLANDS BIRDING TOUR


With more than 26 unique species of birds and over 30 almost endemic, almost all the country's ecosystems present in its territory,  it is one of the most diverse places in Colombia, and the area with more endemic species in the whole country.



BIRDING IN MINCA


A small fresh paradise in the heart of the mountains, with wonderful waterfalls, exuberant vegetation and coffee plantations. A tropical shelter for great diversity of birds such as Keel-billed toucan, Whooping motmot and White-bearded manaki; wonderful butterflies, night monkeys, reptiles and much more.



BIRDING IN EL DORADO RESERVE AND SAN LORENZO RIDGE


Great reserve that protects more than 1000 hectares of cloud forest. Among the silence and sweet melody of the forest, the best place to observe most of the 26 species of endemic birds and amphibians of the Sierra. Journey through a humid and exuberant forest that contains one of the highest densities of endemic plants in the world. Possibility of experiencing surprising moments with a White-tipped quetzal or the long billed hermit, the large butterfly morpho, the ocelot, among many others. And at the top a very nice view of the snowy peaks.



TAYRONA NATIONAL PARK


Transition from wet forest to dry forest, magnificent and legendary turquoise beaches with a wide variety of protected species. In these trails, there is the opportunity to observe Cotton-top Tamarins, Red howler monkeys. Also a great variety of birds such as Lance-tailed Manakin, Rufous-tailed Jacamar and Blue-billed curassow, reptiles and surprising insects.



LOS FLAMENCOS SANCTUARY


Located in the department of La Guajira, 168 km from Santa Marta, close to one of the indigenous communities of Colombia, Wayuus. It is a perfect place to discover the desert and marine ecosystem that is home to the very famous American Flamingo and different shorebirds. Also i  the trails is possible to have great views as some other birds like the Vermillion Cardinal, Orinoco Saltator and Buffy hummingbird.



ITINERARY


Day 1

Pick up in Barranquilla or Santa Marta and visit Isla Salamanca Park and mangrove areas on the way to Minca destination in the foothill of the Santa Marta mountains, accommodation in Faunal Nature Reserve, visits trails around. Possible walk at night.


Highlight birds: Chestnut-winged Chachalaca, Sapphire-bellied hummingbird, Bicolor conebill, Common Tody-flycatcher, Red-rumped woodpecker.


DAY 2

Birding for the morning and part of the afternoon around Minca and visit to Faunal Nature Reserves bird feeder stations and trails. (walking and make use of vehicle). Possible night walk in search for nocturnal wildlife in Faunal reserve.


Highlight birds: Golgen-winged sparrow, Rufous-tailed Jacamar, Whooping motmot, Keel-billed toucan, Collared aracari, Scaled piculet, Swallow tanager, Steely-vented hummingbird, White-bearded manakin, Black-chested jay, Cocoa woodcreeper, Rosy thrush-tanager, Rufous-capped warbler, Crimson-back tanager, Gartered trogon, Masked tityra, Rufous-and-white wren, Pale-eyed pigmy-tyrant.


DAY 3

Birding trip in the morning form Minca to EL Dorado Reserve for the next 2 nights. Birding for the whole day in trails and bird feeders around the lodge


Highlight birds: Bay-headed tanager, Santa Marta (SM) foliage-gleaner, SM antbird, Orange-billed Nightingale-thrush, Coppery emerald, SM brush-finch, Golden-crowned flycatcher, Band-tailed guan, Groove-billed toucanet, SM Blossomcrown, SM woodstar, White-lored warbler, Montane foliage-gleaner, SM tapaculo, Rusty-breasted antpitta, Bang’s wood-wren, Blue-naped chlorophonia.


DAY 4

Early journey in 4x4 to the top of the mountain (San lorenzo ridge) where some endemic bird species can be found plus other very local ones, birding for the whole morning and come back in the afternoon for more birding around the lodge.


Highlight birds: Santa Marta warbler, Santa Marta wood-wren, SM mountain tanager, SM bush-tyrant, SM antpitta, SM Rufous antpitta, SM parakeet, Brown-rumped tapaculo, SM Emerald toucanet, White-tailed starfrontlet, White-tipped quetzal, Masked trogon, Sickle-winged guan, Golden-bellied grosbeak, Golden-breasted fruit-eater, Black-fronted woodquail, White-rumped hawk.


DAY 5

Early birding around the lodge and then start driving down to Minca and to the lowlands where stay 2 nights close by a nice river, in Taironaka EcoHotel. Birding in the afternoon.


Highlight birds: Black-back antshrike, Panama flycatcher, Blue-headed parrot, Buff-breasted wren, White-chinned sapphire, Black-throated mango, Orange-chinned parakeet, Bicolored wren, Scaled dove, Brown-throated parakeet


DAY 6

Birding in the morning along trails in the river side and gardens. Boat trip along Don Diego river to the sea in search for some aquatic birds, red howler monkeys, caimans, etc. More birding and relax in the afternoon around Taironaka lodge.


Highlight birds: Black-crowned antshrike, Lance-tailed manakin, Olivaceus flatbill, Southern bentbill, Bright-rumped Attila, Orange-crowned oriole, Red-legged honeycreeper, White-bellied antbird, Sepia-capped flycatcher, Yellow-breasted flycatcher, Little blue-heron, Osprey, Great Black-hawk, Green Kingfisher, Ringed kingfisher, Pied water-tyrant.


DAY 7

Birding in the morning and then leave to Flamencos Park area, where stay one night in El Remanso del Santuario Logde. Birding in the afternoon.


Highglight birds: Rufous-vented Chachalaca, Crested Bobwhite, Yellow Oriole, Tropical mockingbird,


DAY 8

Birding in the morning with the company of a local indigenous guide along trails. There is also the possibility to arrange a boat trip to take a closer view to the American Flamencos and other aquatic species if desired. In the afternoon transfer to Santa Marta.


Highlight birds: Vermillion cardinal, Orinoco saltator, Black-crested antshrike, White-fringed antwren, Slender-billed inezia, White-whiskered spinetail, Chestnut piculet, Straight-billed woodcreeper, Pale-legged hornero, Tocuyo sparrow, Crested bobwhite, Glaucous tanager, Russet-throated puffbird, Venezuelan flycatcher, Green-rumped parrotlet, American flamingo, Reddish egret.

SIERRA NEVADA ET CÔTE                                                    CARAÏBE

Voyages ornithologiques

Juste à 42 kms de la mer, la Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta, la montagne côtière plus haute de la planète et l`un des paysages plus contrastants, les glaciaux tropicaux.


Avec plus des 26 espèces uniques d`oiseaux et plus de 30 presque endémiques, avec presque tous les écosystèmes du pays présents dans son territoire, l`un des endroits le plus divers de la Colombie.



MINCA


Un petit paradis frais au cœur de la montagne, avec merveilleuses chutes d`eau, une végétation très exubérante et plantations du café. Refuge pour toucans, et une grande diversité d`oiseaux, pour des merveilleuses papillons, écureuils, singes nocturnes, reptiles et beaucoup plus.


EL DORADO RESERVE D`OISEAUX ET SOMMET SAN LORENZO


Grande réserve qui protège 1000 hectares de la forêt nuageuse. Parmi le silence et la douce mélodie de la forêt, le meilleur endroit pour observer les plus des 26 espèces d`oiseaux et amphibies endémiques de la Sierra. Parcours à travers une forêt humide et exubérante qui contient l’une des plus fortes densités de plantes endémiques du monde. Possibilité de vivre des moments surprenants avec un white-tipped quetzal avec le colibri long billed hermit, le grand papillon morpho, l`ocelot, parmi beaucoup d`autres. Et au sommet un très jolie vue des pics enneigées.


TAYRONA NATIONAL PARK


Transition de la forêt humide à la forêt sèche, des magnifiques et légendaires plages d`eau turquoise avec une grande diversité d`espèces protégées. Dans ces sentiers, la possibilité d`observer les petits singes titis de tète blanche, les grands singes hurleurs, et les acrobates singes cappuccinos. Aussi une grande variété d`oiseaux, reptiles et insectes surprenants.


SANCTUAIRE LOS FLAMENCOS


Situé au département de La Guajira, à 168 Km du Santa Marta, proche d`une des communautés indigènes de la Colombie, Les wayuus. C`est un endroit parfait pour découvrir l`écosystème désertique et marine qu`abrite parmi autres l`splendide Flamand Rose.


Itinéraire

 JOUR 1


Départ de Barranquilla vers Santa Marta, visite Parc Salamanca et mangroves autour sur la route pour Minca, destination finale au pied des montagnes de la la Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta. logement à Faunal Réserve Naturelle, visite sentiers autour. Possible trek le soir.


Oiseaux spéciaux: Chestnut-winged Chachalaca, Sapphire-bellied hummingbird, Bicolor conebill, Common Tody-flycatcher, Red-rumped woodpecker.


JOUR 2


Promenades autour de Minca, visite sentiers Faunal Reserve Naturelle et bird feeders stations.  Possible trek le soir à la recherche des singes nocturnes, grenouilles, hiboux...

JOUR 3


Birding trip le matin jusqu'au El Dorado, Reserve Naturelle où nous resterons deux soir. Randonnées toute la journée autour du Parc et visite bird feeders.

JOUR 4


Lever du soleil en face des sommets enneigés, vue surprenante de La Sierra, et endroit parfait pour chercher certains endémiques. Journée de découverte de ce merveilleux habitat. Retour à la Reserve.

JOUR 5


Départ vers les basses terres de la Sierra où nous passerons deux jours au bord d`un superve fleuve et ancien territoire Tayrona.  Journée de decouverte de cette transition et loge à Taironaka EcoHotel. 


Oiseaux spéciaux: Black-back antshrike, Panama flycatcher, Blue-headed parrot, Buff-breasted wren, White-chinned sapphire, Black-throated mango, Orange-chinned parakeet, Bicolored wren, Scaled dove, Brown-throated parakeet


JOUR 6


Promenade en bateau au long du fleuve jusqu'à la mer à la recherche des oiseaux marins, des singes hurleurs, caimans, etc..Et vue depuis la mer des pics enneigées. Après- midi de relax autour Taironaca.

JOUR 7


Départ pour Flamencos Parc,un peu plus au nord du pays, une zone plus aride et avec un écosystème très particulière, la mer et le désert ensembles,  et maison d`une des communautés indigènes de la Colombie, les Wayus. Journée de découverte des ces beaux paysages ey habitants.


Oiseaux spéciaux: Rufous-vented Chachalaca, Crested Bobwhite, Yellow Oriole, Tropical mockingbird.


JOUR 8


À la recherche des oiseaux avec un guide local indigène on pasera le matin dans les sentiers autours. Et on prendra une canoë pour aller voir de plus près les merveilleux Flamants Roses. Après- midi, départ pour Santa Marta.
